Cyclo đêm tôi về mệt nhọc
Quần thấp cao đạp số phận mình
Chiếc xe cũ như đời tôi cũ
Bánh quay vòng đời tôi ly tâm
Tôi lính quèn về sau cuộc chiến
Mượn cyclo kiếm bữa cháo rau
Những thằng lính vừa rời vú mẹ
Cầm súng đi sau cuộc thương tang

Cyclo tôi đường khuya hiu quạnh
Chở gió theo làm bạn đồng hành
Miệng lẩm nhẩm tụng vài câu hát
Thành phố sau lưng mộng ước gì
Bóng đen đứng bên đường mờ tỏ
Chỉ nghe mơ hồ tiếng gọi cyclo
Tôi tấp lại bên đường đón khách
Người quân nhân dáng vẽ phong trần

Anh chở tôi về bên Khánh Hội
Bao nhiêu tiền tôi sẽ gởi anh
Đã lâu lắm chưa về xóm cũ
Kể từ ngày tan cuộc đau binh
Dạ thưa có phải anh là lính
Được tha về sau cải tạo chăng?
Tôi với anh cùng chung số phận
Ván cờ tàn chưa cạn trầm luân

Tôi chở anh như từng chở gió
Gió nhẹ hều anh tựa lá khô
Dường như anh mang nhiều tâm sự
Nên lên xe chẳng nói năng gì
Tôi cho xe dừng ngay đầu hẽm
Nơi gốc me có lẽ lâu đời
Anh chào tôi nhẹ nhàng rão bước
Bóng xa mờ trong ánh đèn khuya

Trước khi đi anh còn ngoãnh lại
Mai chổ này anh đón dùm tôi
Tôi về thăm mẹ già lần cuối
Rồi ra đi chẳng biết bao giờ
Tối hôm sau dừng xe đầu hẽm
Anh đứng chờ tôi cạnh gốc me

Chỉ cầu chúc cho anh an nghỉ
Mãi bình yên nơi cõi vô cùng

On a night ride weary I return
Pedalling up and down my face
My old cyclo like my old life
Wheels turning my life spinning off center
I was a humble soldier after the war
Borrow this cyclo for a bowl of porridge
We were boys just weaned from our mothers
Who took up gun and marched into slaughter
My cyclo on the lonely midnight road

Carry the wind is my companion
Mumbling a few lines of an old song
The city behind me what dreams remain
A dark shadow stooks blurred by the roadside
I faintly heard a call cyclo
I pulled over to take the passenger
A soldier with a weathered grace
Take me back to Khanh Hoi side
Whatever the fair I will pay you

It has been so long since I returned home
Since the day the war ended
Sir, were you also a soldier
Released after re-education?
You and I share the same fate
The lost game still heavy with suffering
I carried him as I carried the wind
He was light like a dry leaf

He seemed to carry many sorrows
So he rode in silence
I stopped the cyclo at the alley’s mouth
Where an old tamarind tree must have stood long
He greeted me and walked gently away
His shadow fading in the midnight lamps
Before leaving, he turned back

Tomorrow, please pick me up right here
I return to visit my old mother one last time
Then I must go I know not when?
The next night I stopped at the alley
He was waiting for me by the tamarind tree
Then gently boarded like a leaf
Falling from a high branch to the road
I saw the apricot blossom on his shoulder

Sir, were you an officer?
Yes, I was once a soldier of the battlefield
For years, I could not return home
Last night I slipped back to my own home
I saw my old mother lighting incense for me
Oh, our soldiers’ lives are so sad
Seeing our pain I could say nothing

He stepped down and raise his hand to his brow
We saluted like soldiers
Sir, I was sergeant now a cyclo driver burning my days
His shadow faded into the mist and smoke
The sad suburbs like a haunted field
Where I stood were only graves rising and falling
Where is the soldier’s grave? Where is it?
You have now pass to the other world

I do not know why you left this earthly realm
I only pray for you to rest in peace
Forever calm in the infinite realm
